Week 1 – Release the Kraken
Just to recap, I am training for the Chicago Marathon (Oct 13) and using the Higdon Intermediate 2 Marathon Training Plan. I developed a great base of fitness in training for IM 70.3 Florida (May 19th). I used the three weeks between 70.3 FL and last week to relax and get ready for this 18 week training block. That being said, I’M READY TO RELEASE THE KRAKEN AND KICK SOME SERIOUS MARATHON ASS. Week 1 is in the books, folks.

General Thoughts: I’m more than happy to switch gears from the demands of juggling training for long course triathlons to the singular focus that is marathon training. I am finding that switching from time-focused workouts to mileage might actually be the best thing for me at this point. I was stuck in a training routine that was based on volume, not quality. I am pretty sure it showed in recent performances. Now, I am focusing on quality workouts instead of weekly time.
I am also happy to report that I set a good tone this first week with 4 early morning workouts. I seem to generally have better days after a morning workout. Less stress, less worrying and I get more satisfaction out of my day. As hard as it may be to wakeup when that alarm goes off at 5:30 in the morning, it seems to have its benefits.
Weekly Mileage: 27 Miles
Total Time: 6:03:23
