Wow, very inspirational! I’ve always wanted to be a triathlete but never known if I have the physical capacity to be able to do it! What would you suggest for someone just started out getting their feet wet in triathlon training? I once run a marathon but was very ill-prepared! I crossed the finish line but suffice it to say, the next day was murder! Any tips for beginners would be much appreciated! Thanks! x
First and foremost, you are certainly capable! Especially if you have completed a marathon before.
To begin with, I would suggest consistently exercising. Even better if your workouts are swimming, biking and running.
And of course a training plan would help. Check out http://www.beginnertriathlete.com and don’t let the name fool you, I still read the articles on there regularly. They also have free training plans, which is a great place to start. Good Luck !
Thanks! I definitely will do that! Thanks for taking out the time to respond!
Thank you for liking our blog – Julia is an aspiring triathlete too. Although we’re making t-shirt quilts, we’re primarily amateur athletes who just love getting out there. So we’re going to emphasize that more in our posts now. Thanks for the inspiration!
Hi Richard! Thanks for stopping by my blog! A triathlon is not something I’ve ever thought I’d think about… but it’s in the back of my mind… I’ve got to complete my first 5K first (goal for June 30) and then the 10K (goal for Dec. 31).
I’ve just started running the last few months and I love it! I’ve always enjoyed long distance biking and I was on the swim team in high school… Hmmmmm, is it possible to start thinking about doing a triathlon in your late 40′s??
It is never too late. Just look at http://trigrandmatry.wordpress.com
It also sounds like a triathlon is right up your alley! but for now, good luck with the running
Thanks, Richard… I’m improving each day
I love this! What a great way to share, document & inspire! Congrats on all finished races and good luck on your future ones. I completed my first Sprint last year, shortly after, experienced some unrelated health issues which kept me from training/racing but am back on the training wagon again — and it feels great! I look forward to following your journey
Thank you ! Likewise, I am loving Project365 and the beautiful photos that come along with it! Keep ‘em coming
Thanks for liking my post! It’s amazing what you do. I can imagine a triathlon far out weighs a marathon as far as intensity. But those finish line moments make it SO worth it! I don’t know if I could ever do what you do. Thanks for inspiring!!
Sooooo worth it ! and more importantly, GOOD LUCK to you in the L.A. Marathon this coming weekend ! Go get it !
Thanks, I appreciate that!
Thanks for liking my blog, new adventure for me…good luck in your races!!
thank you. You too ! I look forward to hearing more about your training and racing!
Thanks very much for the Like
.. your bike is much much shinier than mine
bike envy !
haha. I had to have my bike looking bright and beautiful for the photo!
Thanks for liking my blog entry! I’ve done Ironman Challenges at my gym since 2005, but I did my first Sprint in 2008 (the bike portion was cancelled due to incredibly heavy rains–in fact, I couldn’t see the shore from the last buouy as I turned toward the beach!). I ran into issues and couldn’t do a “real” one in 2009 (if a mini counts, I did one), but I did the Sprint again in 2010–overweight–but I finished!
I’m training as part of TNT this year for a Sprint in April and I think that I’m doing a second Sprint in September. I doubt I’ll ever do distance, I’m almost 50. But I am having fun.
Thanks for your inspirational story. I wish I would’ve started this sooner, but instead I played softball and golfed.
Looking forward to being inspired by your blog!
That’s quite a bike! Any suggestions for a beginner triathlete on the subject of being terrified of riding a real tri bike?
Thanks ! I really do love it. My suggestion would be to get comfortable riding your bike in a safe place (empty parking lot, track, etc.) and at your own pace before you do anything else. Honestly, I have been riding for a few years now and biking next to cars still makes me nervous.
That’s a great idea actually. I, too, am terrified of riding a bike next to cars. Nashville actually has a great bike pathway throughout the city, but I’ve seen a lot of people using it as a passing lane. A friend of mine got hit that way! Lord!
Cyclists can never, never, ever put our trust in drivers! Always gotta be safe and on the lookout. Stories like that scare me!
Thanks for liking my post. I know exactly what you mean about getting the “bug” and not being able to get enough of triathlon! Can’t wait for the upcoming season.
Cool bike. My husband just bought a Cervelo P2.
I think your husband will definitely be pleased with it !
Thanks for stopping by on my blog and taking the time to ‘like’ my posting about my 10k race. After today’s race I know I need to be fitter (which I can do) and set my sights a bit higher (gotta have a challenge). But 13.1 or a triathlon as you do … I wish!
Hi Richard – Thanks for dropping by http://chocolatefuelled.wordpress.com/ and liking my post! I feel somewhat inadequate looking at your efforts!
Hi Richard,
Huge thanks for taking the time out of training to read my post on the first few days of trying to run. A lot has changed since those days…thank God…now I mostly do endurance cycling. Races of 400+ miles or 24 hours.
Keep it up…I especially appreciate the honesty in your writing.
Go Gators!
Be encouraged!
Thanks for following…be encouraged!
Likewise. Carefully reading a lot of your posts now! Really enjoying your thoughts, stories and messages!
I was awarded the honor of the Liebster Award. I’m passing it on to you. Thank you.

you’re welcome!
Thanks for stopping and liking my post! I can only dream of completing a triathlon…swimming is not my forte. Since it seems you enjoy biking, if you find yourself in Iowa, we have RAGBRAI…its a bicycle ride across Iowa. Lots of fun
That looks awesome ! Gotta add that one to the endurance events bucket list.
Have you done RAGBRAI ?
Thanks for checking out my blog and liking my post! I enjoyed looking through yours. Reading through yours reminds me of my marathon training days. Keep it up dude!
Love that your bike is Canadian eh! Right on!
I love the site theme. 8) I tried to make a website of my own, but it did not turn out as pretty as your website. Amazing work.
Ah! I lived in Hollywood last year! How funny!
Good luck with all your training! Sometimes I think I should do a triathlon…but I think I might look a little funny racing on my beach cruiser!
Yep, small world. Thank you! You too !
Wow! Good for you! I want to do a sprint tri next year…..so I am gonna follow your blog and become enlightened.
Miss reading your posts! Hope all is well.
Hey ! Thanks for the sweet message. I really appreciate it. All is certainly well….just swamped with work and training for the past few months.
How is the off season training goin’? Just checking in.
Pretty uneventful. Been working out sparingly since Great Floridian (late Oct). My plan is to ease back into training in the next few weeks. thanks for asking.
What are you up to?
Working against deadline for book aimed at website release later this month. Life and training go on as usual between the compositions. Pray for lots of snow in the Rockies. Farmers love it and I’d like to get some cross country skiing in this winter.
You are quite the inspirational guy, keep up the hard work, can’t wait to see what your up to in 2013. Thanks for stopping by my site too!
Hey Richard, I notice you are in the Miami area. I am new to Tri sport and will be going on vacation to Ft. Lauderdale next month and would like to get in some swimming in the ocean. Do you have any ideas of good places around that area to get in a good open water swim?
Absolutely, email me rchackman[at]gmail.com so we can talk more.
Awesome, will do when I get done with work.
dude, can I hug you!
